I answered the test truthfully, I swear... and damned proud of it.

I enjoyed this test, as far as online quizzes go. Geeks rule.

end of an era

yup, the Treo is kaput. To get it repaired, there is a $19.99 fee for the consultation call, plus $150+ to fix it. Not worth it, unfortunately. leadmedic.com

The upside? I got a new phone. It's a Sony Ericsson T306 with spiffy color screen, polyphonic ringtones, and I even get a camera for it free with rebate... MoBlogging, here I come!

*runs off to download the Super Mario Bros. ringtone*

warwalkin' on a thin line

Woo! local news on the Warchalking site: Borrowing Bandwidth in San Jose, CA.

...suddenly I was surfing at blazing speeds (~2200kbps according to http://webservices.cnet.com/Bandwidth/)...
Just in case anyone is interested in their locations, the first one was the Olive West Apartments in Sunnyvale and the other is CountryBrook off of North Capitol Avenue. Happy surfing!!!

I was anxious to find some local access points. Wooo! Maybe I've just been too lazy to try and warwalk this area. I think it's more wardriving 'round these parts anyway. I prefer to walk. SF was a much better place to do it.

Birthday Wishes

Before the clock strikes, I wanted to wish a Happy Birthday to Astroboy! His birthdate was determined as 7 April 2003 by Ozamu Tezuka back in 1951.

For those not in the know, Astroboy represents the coming of age of Japanese Animation (a.k.a. "Anime").

As an added treat on this day, trailers of the new and upcoming TV series of Astroboy have been released.

An article in the NYTimes discusses the impact of Astroboy on anime, pop culture, and the Japanese influence in the entertainment industry. Go check it out!

lens friends

Alright, I've already tried this out on the local community, to not much response, so I'll give it a try here...

Does anyone have a Pencam (any model) they are willing to trade for my Eyemodule? I do not use a Handspring Visor with a springboard slot any more (I bought a Treo last year), so the eyemodule is useless. A Pencam would provide me with equivalent quality and portability, methinks.

Mostly cos I like the MoBlog galleries I've seen around. :)

Check out the pictures, and let me know if you have a Pencam you want to trade or maybe buy my old Visor Platinum too. They're both in great shape. :)

it's not your mother's internet

This is schweet. Chris and I have just completed a session of Warwalking in SF, and we've found a plethora of wireless access points right in his neighborhood. The thrill of seeing an access point pop up on MacStumbler is a geeky delight.

I blog this from the front step of Casa de Pirillo. It's so cool. :)

My arm hurts from carrying around my Powerbook (although it really is a light laptop), but it was an enlightening experience.

UPDATE (3/23/03 11:52):
Peeeeekshurs!

My arms still are sore today. How lame does that sound? Soreness from a geek activity...?

"How did you injure your arms?"

"It's an old geek injury. Got it in the ol' Warwalk of 2003."

"Oh you poor thing. Let me buy you a coffee."

oh, agony, agony...

the way it's meant to be played

This is the reason that I haven't seen a lot of Kev for the past coupla weeks.

Tonight is the release party for the GeForce FX, which is the first major product release he's worked on. Now it's here, and he can finally sleep.

If you're too lazy to poke through the info, I've run down the juicy info for ya:

pins and vids and MAME, oh my!

So, as promised, I spent most of today at the California Extreme Gaming Show... as a geek *should*. I wore my "wizard needs food badly" t-shirt, of course. The ratio of men to women was staggering, naturally... but I felt perfectly comfortable whooping their butts in Warlords, hee hee! ;)

They had live projections of Dragon's Lair and various vector games on the convention hall's wall. Too awesome.

I played a lot of Pinball. Where else are you going to get this much pinball in one place? I took full advantage of it, and played almost every one of 'em. I played a few good games of Revenge from Mars with Mish, and I got a decent score of about 91,000,000!

Loren was there too, and he bought a game cabinet to start on his MAME project. Wish I had enough money to buy a game... but then I'd hafta toil over *which* one, such a hard decision!

Unfortunately, I did not have a digital camera on hand, and chanced lugging around my Nikon SLR. I only took 10 pictures. Whoops. My hands were full playing games, anyways. What a good way to spend a Sunday.

Dammit.

Alright. I'm fixing to buy a new toy within a month or so. I need your opinions. Should I buy...

The yummy new 10GB iPod for $399?

A Canon Digital Elph S330 for $399?

A Pentax Optio 330 for $420?

or... any other suggestions? Should I just save the money for the next generation of Power Macs?

what, me geek?

I guess this one is essential for me, as memes go.

You are 54% geek
You are a geek. Good for you! Considering the endless complexity of the universe, as well as whatever discipline you happen to be most interested in, you'll never be bored as long as you have a good book store, a net connection, and thousands of dollars worth of expensive equipment. Assuming you're a technical geek, you'll be able to afford it, too. If you're not a technical geek, you're geek enough to mate with a technical geek and thereby get the needed dough. Dating tip: Don't date a geek of the same persuasion as you. You'll constantly try to out-geek the other.

I want everything on Kid Robot.

I see a new obsession forming... I'm already readying to buy a bunch of Medicom Kubrick figures soon.

I am so loving the amelie and gloomy bear figures.

Shh... don't tell Kev. He doesn't want me to waste my money on silly hobbies. ;)

geek quiz

So one of the reasons why I picked up the most recent issue of MacAddict is because I had a silly interest in taking their "Geek Quiz" advertised on the front cover. It reads: "We dare you to take our GEEK QUIZ. Prove if you're a true Mac addict – if you can..."

I was up for the challenge.

So I took the grueling 60 question quiz, using *gasp* pencil and paper (I remembered to fill in my circles completely, thank you), and I got 44 correct. This puts me right on the upper limits of being a "Colonel Panic". Getting 45 right would have made me a "Terminal Geek". So near, yet so far!

My geekiness has not fully lived up to its potential this day. Soon, my dear, soon...

So I'm here at my parents' house in the East Bay. Why the heck does this site look like such crap in Windows?

What kind of world is this, anyways?

This house needs a mac or two. or three.

This is effin' KICKASS.

Behind the Typeface: Cooper Black

Absolutely genius... hilarious to anyone in graphic design and/or typography. Thanks to Todd for the link.

Bonus points to you if you can name Cooper's friend before the caption pops up. Oh, and the other typeface on the playground (easy!).

In the Works

I have no idea why, but I was hit with an urge to do some work fairly late in the evening. Maybe it's because I'm getting all geek-cited about learning PHP.

I used my blooming skillz to create a new "Current Weather Conditions" page on This Week's site. It's pretty spiff. Sure, I used someone else's script, but I customized it. That's how we all learn to code, eh?

Then I thought, "hey, I could use this kinda stuff for my own needs"! So I poked around a bit and found some web-fetching scripts to get me started. Look what I made... a Geeky Start Page for myself! I'm gonna customize it even more, add some of my favorite comics to it, local geocaches, and all sorts of neat stuff. w00t!

Oh yeah, and sleep should come pretty soon. Dang.

Connected

(Stereo MC's song goin' through my head now)

Got my new toy today (er, Friday), the Handspring Treo 180g. I am so digging this thing.

If you ever get a chance to drive one, I highly recommend it. It's so choice.

Cell phone, SMS, e-mail, web browser, messenger, PLUS all the features of a regular Palm OS device, all in one small package. It's a geeky dream.

If I could only get a GPS on this thingy... *drool*

Bug me! I set up a on my Treo.

Un-wired

I am now officially wireless! w00t!

We had bought a couple of Linksys WAP11s at Fry's a while back, and I couldn't get the base one to do crap. After lots of toiling, I gave up for a spell and didn't bother with it.

Until now. I looked at the box that I had opened and saw the stupid "Open Box" sticker on the front of the box. CRAP. That's not what I needed to see. This dilemma has happened TWICE to Kevin already in the past coupla weeks... and both items did not work when he plugged em in.

Dadgummed Fry's and their dadgummed Open Box stickers. >.

So I opened the "NEW" box that was sitting unopened and plugged it into our Asante Friendlynet Router. Booyah! I saw the signal bar on the Airport Control Panel shoot up. Success!

Thanks to Chris, who helped me through this shit. Although, I did get myself out of it... ;)

Then again, he got me into this as well. Damn you, Chris. Damn you.

Now I can compute in bed, in the kitchen and in the bathroom.

Not like I will... *g*

Jukebox Fun

I'm trying to make a digital jukebox. Here's My MP3 Collection so far (this link is an Excel spreadsheet). Most are legit MP3s, for the record. EMusic.comis an excellent legit MP3 source. They pay royalties to the artists. Sounds good to me! But yeah, I'm as guilty as most, in the respect that I used Napster and Audiogalaxy to get some hard-to-find and selected tracks.

I love my new Yamaha CRW2100FXZ (Lightspeed 16x10x40x External Firewire CD-RW). I highly recommend it. Got it at Outpost.com for $149 after rebate... a VERY good deal. Been using it for some well-overdue archiving and also for ripping more MP3's.

Just bought a copy of Tropico this afternoon, after playing the demo for a couple hours last night. It rocks. Bonus, it works in Mac OS X... but haven't tried it yet since I'm a OS 9 devotee. Anyhoo... I love sim games. But I have been almost afraid to play SimTower, one of my favorites, because it reminds me too much of the WTC. :(

X-Files tonight. I'm sure you've all heard that it's the final season. Time for me to admit that it's on its last legs.

Enough links from me for tonight. I'm working tomorrow, so enjoy the holiday, those of you that have it off, and take a moment to remember Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy.
