The next best thing (10:46AM)

I may not be there at Gnomedex, but I've got the next best thing. Tom has pointed his iSight at the Keynote and is videoconferencing with me live via iChat AV. Technology is wonderful. :) Thank you Tom, for bringing the action to me!

I hope ya'll drink one for me! ;)

iCovet (01:23AM)

With a new laptop pending in my immediate future, it is hard for me to resist any further gagetry when I go to the Apple Store or read the news and rumour sites. I need to stop visiting these places. They're like crack... or so I'm told.

Tell me a reason not to get an iSight. Sure, it's a wad o' cash, but it's freakin' awesome. The latest mention of the shiny cylindrical camera as TIME's Gadget of the Week and my recent discovery of MyiSight.com (where you can meet other iChat AV users) is NOT helping.

And... argh! Everquest for OS X! Argh! I might as well hand over my wallet now.

---- comments (8) ----

Life's too short not to enjoy, so go indulge yourself.

-- used to spend money on geek toys July 21, 2003 05:35 AM --

I love my iSight. It r0x0rs. But it's of limited utility.

-- Tom Bridge July 21, 2003 06:00 AM --

Sorry for being a bit off topic, but I MUST know! :) Where is everyone getting those fantastic 80x15 little buttons that say all sorts of things (you've got moblog, handheld, avantgo buttons, etc of that sort)on the bottom right side of your site... Please, please, please tell me! I must know!

-- richard July 21, 2003 07:16 AM --

Richard, you can get those buttons at a site called Steal These Buttons...Great stuff!

And Courtney, you should amass all of the gadgets and toys that your heart desires. Think of it as any other hobby, and you'll feel a lot less guilty about spending the cash...Remember, if it feels good, do it (and don't listen to "used to spend money on geek toys")!!!

Everquest for Mac? oh man that stuff is dangerous stuff! I lost a friend to that game... I wish I was kidding...

-- jesse July 21, 2003 06:54 PM --

I've been eyeing a new laptop, but only because a new battery for my old one is between 1/10th and 1/5th the cost of a new one. The rest of the things are just fluff.

-- Gigamatt July 22, 2003 04:26 AM --

Lucky woman you are...

If you're gonna get a new laptop you might as well get some new toys to go with it. iSight would be perfect for my gf and I...video chat for free! Alas she doesn't have a mac and things are so inflated in price over the UK that I don't see it happening any time soon.

I say go for the iSight over Everquest...I saw them both at the local CompUSA the other day. They weren't kidding when they said the iSight was full screen...great viewing area and there was no lag with the 14 inch iBook it was attached to. Very cool.

cleaning house (12:13AM)

A few minor changes have occurred in our home recently:

A year after moving back to CA, it seems like we're still getting settled. Does it ever end?

---- comments (1) ----

I don't think it ever really ends. I've been in the same apartment for almost 5 years now and I still have storage/clutter problems. I also totally get you on the pantry thing... I have canned food from like a year ago. I don't know if these things have expiry dates.. All these home decorating shows on HGTV and TLC just make me drool with envy that they're able to keep their place so neat and tidy. Then I realize that these people probably have maids or designers to help them out.. Darn them!

ups n' downs (08:49PM)

Dear reader, I have good news and bad news.

The bad news first: I won't be attending Gnomedex this week. Circumstances just won't allow it, and it doesn't make a lot of financial sense for me at the moment to spend over $500 to party with my fellow geeks. Although it has been tempting, I just can't do it. I hope to see some good mobloggin' goin' on if you're going to be at the conference!

The good news: Instead, I will be saving my shells for a trip to Japan at the end of August! I am totally stoked... I have never been overseas (and Hawaii doesn't count). Turns out Kev will be there on business, and I can tag along! Wow, this means I gotta get a passport...

More good news: Although I will not be at Gnomedex this weekend, I will be attending California Extreme in San Jose on Saturday. If you're in the bay area, and you love arcade and pinball games, you simply MUST be there! I attended last year, and had a ball!

---- comments (4) ----

Bad news about Gnomedex, but great news about Japan. Wish I could take time off and go...

the trouble with cookies (06:16PM)

Is it just me, or did the upgrade to Safari 1.0 render some sites useless, i.e., cookies are not working correctly anymore? I thought this was nipped in the bud a long time ago...

In other news, my beloved powerbook is for sale. I've been talking with a few peeps offa craigslist... its fate is soon to be determined...

---- comments (6) ----

Why are you selling it?

-- Jasmeet July 18, 2003 06:58 PM --

out of selfish reasons... my powerbook is 2.5 years old, a first generation Ti at 400 mhz. I have been wanting a 12" Ti since the day I saw it. *swoon*

-- courtney July 18, 2003 07:22 PM --

OMG I thought it was just me, also have you noticed that CSS rendering SUCKS too. I have reset Safari and it still doesn't render alot of stuff correctly anymore.

I wanna go back to a beta. The only thing I like about this version is the little blue box where a image should be, it makes viewing sites alot easier, I dont have to aruge with people anymore saying there isn't a image there =P

-- mike July 18, 2003 11:37 PM --

Yeah, I'm havin' cookie-issues, too. I always leave it on 'only sites I navigate to'... which could be problematic or not compatible with many sites (which contain redirects, etc.)

Maybe 'always accept' would be the better option 'til there's a fix. Who knows.

-- Mike July 19, 2003 06:41 AM --

What a coincidence... I've got an iBook for sale too. I'm waiting for the new 15" models to come out in the powerbook range... I thought they'd be on market at the last big Apple event.

-- July 20, 2003 08:31 PM --

Safari is a little ditzy. A couple of things just don't work for me. Actually, submission of MovableType entries is one of them. I still keep explorer around for those few things it goes space-cadet on. This is annoying.

The 12" is so choice. If you have the means ... ;)

met up (02:29PM)

Last night, we met our record for bloggers at the monthly meetup! Now, if Guy was there, we woulda broken that record! Maybe next time. ;)

And how glad were we to be back at Coffee Society? The masses rejoiced.

May I recommend the double cosmopolitan on a warm summer evening? It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. David had a few drinks that looked mighty tasty too... which reminds me, I must try one (or two) of his local caffeine stops soon.

It was Kev's first meetup... it was actually an evening that he could attend, imagine that! Jon showed up for his second meetup in the South Bay... glad to see the circle growing a little!

Jim brought his color Hiptop for Mark and I to ooh and ahh at; and in turn, we moblogged a photo or two. He and Faisal showed up a wee bit fashionably late, but always welcome! We even had a passerby sit down with us and ask what all the ruckus was about! "What's a blog?" You asked the wrong crowd! Ask Rich, he has a strong opinion on what a blog is!

Antwon brought a handful of his bumper stickers for us. I have yet to see any of the attendees from last night posting any photos of these strategically placed stickers! What's taking you guys so long?

Elke had to depart a bit early (last bus, I assume?), but it is always a pleasure to see her. The evening ended with Jonas and Ealasaid practicing aikido in the parking lot. Street Fighter references ensued. Good times.

---- comments (11) ----

hey, did I see you taking digipix of Jonas and me messing around? (dunno if it counts as 'practicing' - we were just goofing around.)

-- Ealasaid July 17, 2003 03:37 PM --

Yup, last bus. But the upside of that was that I got to start reading "Shutter Island", which Mark let me borrow - the plan here is to discuss the ending. Apparently, people have strong opinions on it.

hot in herre (02:48PM)

We have this one room in the house that gets god awful HOT in the summer (and come to think of it, freezing cold in the summer). Obviously, the ventilation is poor. It has one small window, a sliding glass door that has sun shining through it for most of the day (with curtains), and a door-sized entryway leading to the rest of the house.

We have no A/C, and one fan in the room. Bleh.

Any tips and tricks on keeping a room cool for the summer?

---- comments (8) ----

My daughter's room has the same problem, except it has four large windows, which we can't open because invariably a bug gets in and she is freaked by bugs, so you can imagine... *very* dark curtains & putting the fan in the doorway pulling in from the cooler air from the rest of the house...

-- gwen July 14, 2003 03:19 PM --

Liquid nitrogen.

Oh, you meant *useful* tips. Hmm.

-- eric July 14, 2003 05:05 PM --

i live in a room like that! pain in da arse!

-- jack July 14, 2003 05:18 PM --

What you could do is, at night, leave the window open, and let all the cool air at night in. If you want to make sure it gets cool, get one of those window fans that you could pick up at wal-mart or target.

Once daylight breaks, and it starts getting hot, turn off the fan, shut the window, keep the room as dark as possible.

And, if you're room gets too hot again, use that window fan to pull the air out of the room.

I do this at my apartment, and have only seen one or two days when it still got too hot. =)

-- Jasmeet July 14, 2003 05:29 PM --

I used to spray my muslin curtains with water from a spraybottle, opened the window, and put a shoe in the door as stopper. Got a great cool breeze going, and the moisture in the air is .... aaaaaahhhhh ... wonderful!

-- Elke July 14, 2003 05:54 PM --

The sun coming through the doors might be the culprit. Could you put up some shrubbery to block out some of the sunlight? We have a small room with only one window. When the humidity goes up it is awfully hot in there. The previous owners left us the ceiling fan in that room. Havent tried it though but I will as soon as another heat wave hits maybe next week?

-- netpanday July 15, 2003 04:13 AM --

I don't have any advice, but an interesting story. I've effectively made my company's satellite office unusable if the weather outside is about 25C or higher. (about what, 78, 80F?). Reason? I stuck a commercial espresso machine in the office, including wiring it up, and plumbing it in. Problem is, it's a massive heat generator. That space already gets hot enough (no A/C), and the machine puts it over the edge. Put another way, that machine gets so hot, that office space does not need any normal heating in the winters here in Vancouver.

I have disgruntled employees.... but they love the coffee.

-- July 16, 2003 08:36 PM --

Good suggestions from Jasmeet. Your only hope for survival/comfort is to get some air moving through the room. Find the biggest fan you can cram into that small window and set it to exhaust the room air during the day. Augment that with a fan in the doorway to the rest of the house, pulling hopefully cooler air into the room.

If there's an existing overhead light fixture, a small ceiling fan can also do wonders to make a room feel livable again.

Totally off topic, I hope you'll share some of your cyanotypes and/or other alt-process works soon.

forbidden fruit (11:16PM)

Damn. The new Apple Store in Walnut Creek opens tomorrow, and I didn't even realize. I hear people are camped out in front of the store as I type this. That's some crazy shit... especially for just a free t-shirt. Well, come to think of it, it's similar to when IKEA opened in Emeryville, and people were camped out for days... now that's some crazy shit if I ever saw any.

Walnut Creek is growing like a freakin' weed, and there are always new stores opening up. It's scary... I remember growing up in that town which didn't seem to have a building over 3 stories high. Now it's exploded into a bustling city of sorts.

But... argh. I had no idea that the Apple Store was opening up there until a few days ago. Argh. Argh. Arrrrrgh.

I will be in the WC area tomorrow, but not sure if I will make it out to the store... and I sure as hell am not going to make it to be one of the first thousand to get just a stinkin' T-shirt. Anyone else planning on being there?

Oh, and BTW, did you hear that Oprah loves iPods, so she GAVE away 15GB iPods to everyone in her studio audience today? Double triple mega ARGH.

-- jon July 12, 2003 09:19 PM --

same thing's happening in my neighborhood. Thank goodness they havent zoned my part of town to include commercial establishments but 4 blocks south of me its totally comercial zones. Theres like 20 cell phone, 10 restaurants, 4 asian supermarkets, and 15 coffee/tea/bubble drink shops in a 10 block radius. Thats pretty bustle to me...

-- netpanday July 13, 2003 08:07 AM --

Joe Update (11:37PM)

Today was Joe's last day of radiation. He's also done with his chemo treatment as well, and it looks like he is going to go home this Thursday or Friday! This is great news!

I went to visit him in the hospital today... although he was tuckered out and barely opened his eyes, I took comfort in hoping that it would be smooth sailing from this point on for him and his family. The next time I see him, he will be in the comfort of home... most excellent!

He will be getting an MRI in about 30 days, and I will be sure to let you all know what the results are.

Thanks for all your support and thoughts during this time!

My Mom is currently in the middle stages of cancer, and we just went through all the chemo and radiation stuff. She's not doing it any longer, it was too harsh for her, and at one stage, she was down to 85lbs (from about 145lbs normal weight).

Another project is launched! I have been working on and off on this site for many many months now... it may look simple, but the site went through a few redesigns & restructuring, and is finally done (well... it's missing a small amount of content, but the bulk of my work is done)!

The Weddings Planners is a business run by a former co-worker of mine in Hawaii. Keri still maintains her day job at the magazine, runs The Wedding Planners, and is a full-time mother of two to boot! If you or anyone you know is looking for assistance in planning an island wedding, look them up!

Oh, the Places You'll Go! (11:58PM)

We have been super-mega nonstop over this holiday weekend. After a day or two of rest following our SoCal jaunt, I had to work for a day over in the East Bay, then the festivities begun.

It all started with an innocent dinner. One of Kev's co-workers invited us over for some tasty chicken, a coupla bottles of Two Buck Chuck, and stimulating conversation, including the many varieties of Lego Bionicles. I had no idea there were so many varieties...

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Kev had Thursday off as well as Friday, so we were determined to make the best of our long weekend. Of course, we slept in... big time. Maybe too much, because I ended up with a sore back and a bit of a headache after getting up. We headed out for a nice drive along the coast, to Half Moon Bay, and hitting the Pescadero Beach area to drop a traveler off at a geocache and exploration of the tide pools. The fog was rolling in, and I was freezing my ears off!

On the Fourth, we decided to try and get away from the crowds and spend some time in the great outdoors. Our goal was to go towards the ocean again, but to run into more blue skies and sun than we did at Pescadero. Hmm, maybe Santa Cruz would have better weather. What we didn't take into account was that maybe everyone else wanted to get down that way for the festivities. Silly us... we hit some mondo traffic along the 17, and decided to turn right back around. We ended up going to see the movie Legend of Suriyothai at the Camera One, and a nice quiet dinner at Pasta Pomodoro. We even got to see the tail end of the SJ fireworks display, right from patio of the restaurant.

Saturday, we finally got out to Santa Cruz. The weather was perfect... it's good to get away from the blazing sun and dry air of the Valley. I must remember to return to the Natural Bridges State Park to visit the Monarch Resting Grounds in the winter... I bet it's awsome! We were able to hit a couple more geocaches and cruise around town for a few hours, before heading home to prepare for our evening.

This evening was spent in glorious geekdom with Tom, Tiffany, Gretchen and Chris. G had made us reservations at the charming Steps of Rome Trattoria in the always charming North Beach, where the waiters sing gleefully to the piped-in music, the food is fresh, and the Barbera d'Alba is delicious. I need to go back there again sometime... their menu was incredibly hard to make a decision from. All the girls had Ravioli, though. ;)

Tomorrow is gonna a long day. We have to leave early in the morning to take Kev's daughter to Girl Scout camp in Truckee, which is about a 4 hour drive away. We might spend the night somewhere up there or around Sacramento. Hmm, that reminds me, I gotta be sure to charge the ol' iPod...

I think we've spent enough time in the car lately, don't you think?

PS: Be sure to check the MoBlog for more action as it happens!
