Two down, one to go.
I have completed the more challenging midterms so far... Japanese and 20th Century Photo History. Phew! I don't hear back on how I did on them until the middle of next week. xlpharmacy.com
I have one more exam, and it's not even an exam. Just a little quiz-type thing, in the horrendously easy Photoshop class. Why do I take a Photoshop class? it's a requirement for Photo majors... although I'm not entirely sure if I'm going for a degree in photography just yet, I'm well on my way.
Halfway there! This quarter is going by fast. Then again, quarters *are* short, and I'm more used to a semester system anyways. The good thing about the quarter system is getting more classes completed in a shorter amount of time. The bad thing about it is the high concentration of material packed into that short amount of time. Phew!
Just curious, and you don't have to answer... do you have a degree, and if so, in what? Do you apply that knowledge today in your current job(s)?
Hi, LOVE your blog. :D
I have a general AA, an AS in "electronics engineering technology" (electronics), and I have most of a bachelor's in "Computer Information Systems". I now own a small web design business and use NONE of it. All I use in my web design business is self-taught: html, dreamweaver, stylesheets, photoshop photoshop photoshop. Even before my biz, all jobs I had were using my self-taugh skills and none of my college-taught skills/education.
transmitted by Laserone on February 6, 2003 10:04 PMSame, got a bachelors in CIS (Computer Information Science) however the majority of the skills I use at work (web designer at http://www.bfm.bm) were self taught. Those skills learnt in college are not unimportant though as the principles of computing they teach are basically building blocks which enable you to learn easier later ..
In saying that, a lot of younger people (me included) go to school with a bit of computer knowledge anyways .. and who wants to learn COBOL anyways ... fuck that !!
transmitted by Kevin on February 7, 2003 07:12 AMokay, you guys are scaring me.
transmitted by james on February 7, 2003 08:28 AMi transfered from a semester university to a trimester(quarter) university and i agree...the pace is much faster. i needed a period of adjustment.
i have a BS in Operations & Mgmt Info Systems (OMIS). it's a fancy name for CIS.
transmitted by grant on February 7, 2003 09:28 AMI have a degree in BioPhysics. I went on to become a help desk technician, and then a Computer Programmer. I did not use any of my BioPhysics knowledge in either pusuit.
I am now in the process of getting an MDiv. My Computer knowledge and my BioPhysics background do nothing for me there either.
However, my undergraduate education taught me a lot about critical thinking and analysis that I put to good use both in my jobs and in my current Masters program.
transmitted by wink on February 7, 2003 12:20 PMCollege is overrated, and I should know, I tried it *twice* ;) Actually college/university is really great for some people, they get a lot out of it. Others are not well suited for school at all (like me). I've always been a hard core geek, pretty much been a programmer since I had a computer, now I work as a "Senior Software Engineer - GUI" - which translates into: "Overpaid Slacker". All my useful knowledge is self taught and practical. (That's not to say that I don't know abstractions and higher level design & architecture - I do it almost daily). Go to College, but learn what you want to learn on your own.
Cheers :)
